Privacy Policy

This website, wetrackeverything.com (the “Site”), is operated by Chris Tarrolly, 826 N. Cass St., Milwaukee, WI 53202, United States. Throughout the rest of this document that person is referred to simply as “the Webmaster” (also “we”, “us” and “our”).

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data the Webmaster collects through the Site, why it is collected, who it is shared with, how long it is kept and what rights you have over it. It applies to every visitor, including visitors located in the European Economic Area (“EEA”), the United Kingdom and the United States.

1. Who is responsible for your data

The Webmaster is the data controller for the personal data processed through this Site, within the meaning of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and the UK GDPR. You can reach the Webmaster at [email protected] or through the contact page.

The Webmaster has not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as the Site does not carry out large-scale or systematic monitoring of the kind that would require one.

2. What this site is

This Site is an independent publication about ad tracking and conversion attribution. It is not the vendor of any software reviewed or recommended here. The Site earns commissions through affiliate links. It does not sell any product of its own, does not process payments and does not operate user accounts for customers. That keeps the amount of personal data involved deliberately small.

3. What personal data we collect

3.1 Data you give us directly

  • Contact form. When you write to us through the contact page we receive the name, email address, subject and message you type in, along with the date and time of the submission.
  • Comments. If commenting is enabled on an article and you leave a comment, we receive the name, email address and website you enter, the comment itself, your IP address and your browser user-agent string. The IP address and user-agent are used for spam detection.
  • Email. If you write to us directly, we hold whatever you choose to put in that email.

3.2 Data collected automatically

  • Server logs. Our hosting provider records IP addresses, dates and times of access, requested URLs, HTTP status codes and user-agent strings. These logs exist to keep the Site running and secure.
  • Analytics and measurement. Subject to your consent, third-party tools record which pages you view, how you arrived, roughly where you are (country or city level, derived from a truncated IP address), and technical details about your device and browser. Microsoft Clarity, if enabled, additionally records anonymised interaction data such as scrolling, clicks and mouse movement in the form of aggregated heatmaps and session replays.
  • Advertising measurement. Subject to your consent, the Meta Pixel records that you visited certain pages so that the effectiveness of marketing can be measured and so that Meta can build advertising audiences.

We do not knowingly collect special categories of data (health, political opinions, religious beliefs, biometric data and similar), and you should not send such data to us through the contact form.

4. Why we use your data, and our legal basis

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR we must have a legal basis for each purpose. Ours are:

PurposeLegal basis
Answering your enquiry and any follow-up correspondenceSteps taken at your request prior to entering a relationship, and our legitimate interest in replying to people who write to us (Art. 6(1)(b) and 6(1)(f))
Publishing and moderating commentsYour consent, given when you submit the comment (Art. 6(1)(a))
Keeping the Site available, secure and free of spam and abuseOur legitimate interest in protecting the Site (Art. 6(1)(f))
Audience analytics (Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity)Your consent, given through the cookie banner (Art. 6(1)(a))
Advertising and conversion measurement (Meta Pixel)Your consent, given through the cookie banner (Art. 6(1)(a))
Complying with legal, tax and accounting obligationsLegal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c))

Where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of anything done before you withdrew it. See the Cookie Policy for how to change your choices.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

The Site uses cookies and similar technologies. Anything that is not strictly necessary for the Site to work is loaded only after you give consent. A full breakdown of every cookie, who sets it and how long it lasts is in the separate Cookie Policy.

6. Who receives your data

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers below, each acting under its own terms and privacy policy:

  • Our hosting provider, which stores the Site and its database and keeps server logs.
  • Google (Google Ireland Limited for EEA and UK visitors, Google LLC elsewhere), for Google Analytics. See Google’s privacy policy.
  • Meta (Meta Platforms Ireland Limited for EEA and UK visitors, Meta Platforms, Inc. elsewhere), for the Meta Pixel. See Meta’s privacy policy.
  • Microsoft Corporation, for Microsoft Clarity, where enabled. See Microsoft’s privacy statement.
  • Our email provider, which delivers messages sent from the contact form and any reply we send you.

We may also disclose data where we are legally required to do so, for example in response to a valid order from a court or a public authority, or where it is necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

7. International transfers

The Webmaster is based in the United States, and several of the providers listed above process data in the United States. If you are in the EEA or the UK, this means your data may be transferred outside your country.

Those transfers rely on the safeguards recognised under Chapter V of the GDPR: the European Commission’s adequacy decision for the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified under it, and otherwise the Standard Contractual Clauses adopted by the European Commission, supplemented where appropriate by additional technical and organisational measures. For UK visitors, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum applies. You may request a copy of the relevant safeguards by writing to the address in section 13.

8. How long we keep your data

  • Contact form messages and email correspondence: up to 24 months after the last exchange, unless a longer period is needed to defend a legal claim.
  • Comments: for as long as the article remains published, or until you ask us to delete them.
  • Server logs: normally a few weeks, according to our hosting provider’s configuration.
  • Analytics and advertising data: for the retention period set by each provider. Google Analytics data is retained for no longer than 14 months; Microsoft Clarity retains data for 30 days by default; Meta applies its own schedule.
  • Cookies: for the lifetime stated for each one in the Cookie Policy.

9. Security

The Site is served over HTTPS, access to its administration area is restricted and protected by strong credentials, and software is kept up to date. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach occurs that is likely to result in a risk to your rights, we will notify the competent supervisory authority and, where required, you, within the time limits the law sets.

10. Your rights if you are in the EEA or the UK

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy of it.
  • Rectify data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Erase your data where one of the grounds in Article 17 applies.
  • Restrict processing in the circumstances set out in Article 18.
  • Data portability: receive the data you gave us in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
  • Object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent.
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work. A list of EEA authorities is published by the European Data Protection Board; in the UK, the authority is the Information Commissioner’s Office.

To exercise any of these, write to [email protected]. We will respond within one month, and will tell you if we need to extend that period. Exercising your rights is free; we may charge a reasonable fee or refuse only where a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.

11. Your rights if you are in the United States

Several US states grant privacy rights to their residents, including California (CCPA as amended by the CPRA), Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas and others. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we have collected about you, to obtain a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, to opt out of the sale or sharing of it and of targeted advertising, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.

11.1 Sale and sharing

The Webmaster does not sell personal information for money. However, advertising technologies such as the Meta Pixel may amount to “sharing” personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and to “targeted advertising”, as those terms are defined in California and several other state laws. We treat them as such in order to be transparent rather than to argue over definitions.

You can opt out at any time by rejecting advertising cookies in the cookie banner, or by changing your choices later as described in the Cookie Policy. No account is needed and we will not treat you differently for opting out.

11.2 Global Privacy Control

Where your browser or an extension sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a valid request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information for that browser.

11.3 Categories involved

In the twelve months before the date of this policy, the categories of personal information handled through the Site have been: identifiers (name, email address, IP address), internet or network activity (pages viewed, referring pages, interaction data), approximate geolocation derived from IP address, and the content of any message you send us. These come from you directly and from your use of the Site, and are used for the purposes in section 4. We do not collect sensitive personal information as that term is defined in California law, and we do not use or disclose it for purposes requiring a right to limit.

To exercise a US state privacy right, write to [email protected] with enough detail for us to locate your data. We will verify your request by replying to the email address associated with it, and will respond within the period the applicable state law allows (45 days in most states, extendable once). An authorised agent may submit a request on your behalf with written proof of authorisation.

12. Children

The Site is aimed at businesses and professionals and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16, or under 13 in the United States for the purposes of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, write to us and we will delete it.

13. Affiliate links and other websites

The Site contains affiliate links. If you click one and go on to subscribe, the Webmaster may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. When you follow such a link, you leave this Site, and the destination may set its own cookies and collect its own data under its own privacy policy, over which the Webmaster has no control. The same applies to any other external link, and to embedded content such as videos or maps, which behaves as if you had visited the third-party site directly. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in the Site, in the tools it uses or in the law. The date at the top always shows the current version. Where a change materially affects your rights, we will make it prominent on the Site.
